The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant

The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant, from the University of Virginia Press, is a digital collection of letters, photographs, endorsements, several accomplished drawings done as a cadet at West Point, military strategy diagrams, memos, field orders, receipts, bills of lading, his marriage license, oaths of office, and telegrams. One of these last is to President Abraham Lincoln from Jackson, Tennessee in 1862, reporting casualties of recent battles. He writes of the Confederates: “The ground is not yet cleared of their unburied dead.” Grant was elected our 18^th President, after serving as the Secretary of War and the Commanding General of the United States Army in the American Civil War. During his term as President, he was instrumental in leading the country out of the last vestiges of slavery and nationalism during Reconstruction. This is a core collection of his documents, useful to those whose research interests include Antebellum South, the Civil War, Reconstruction, or his presidency.
