Digital DARE is the electronic counterpart of the Dictionary of American Regional English, the six-volume work, though started in 1985 and completed in 2013, can trace its history to 1889 with the beginning of the American Dialect Society. A dictionary of regional words and phrases, its complexity comes from its rich sources of data, including the publications of the American Dialect Society, published literature, the DARE survey (completed in 1970), and the DARE maps. Digital DARE has all of the information contained in the print version, and it also allows a certain amount of interactivity, particularly in the maps, with the ability to create maps based on selection of terms. The richness of the content outpaces the smoothness of the interface, an issue that will likely improve vastly over time. Because of the unique purpose and content of DARE, the print volumes are the only other place to find the same information that is held in Digital DARE.
