Google Translate is a free app available for Android and iOS devices. Results with machine translation will vary from “pretty good” to “really wrong.” The app’s design for mobile use cases, including live translation of audio and translation of text in mobile camera photos via character recognition, is undeniably very forward thinking. A large number of languages are supported. Google Translate can’t compete with a human translator for nuance, context, or accuracy, but it’s free, fast, and might be good enough for some uses in the field if user expectations are realistic.
