abstract = "This article offers an overview of the current state of apps in both the broadest context and particularly in libraries. The article is aimed at the general user who is somewhat familiar with a range of library and information science topics, but may be a novice user of mobile technology.
A list of prominent database providers is offered with a brief survey of their adoption of mobile interfaces or separate mobile applications. Later articles in this series promise more in depth reviews of particular applications as well as explorations of wider issues in app development and
