Omeka is an elegant, flexible, easy-to-use digital exhibition and collection platform for libraries, museums, cultural heritage organizations, and individuals. Omeka can be used to create extensive digital archives of items of all types: text, images, sound, moving images, multipage documents, and more. Often described as “Wordpress for museums,” downloadable Omeka is a free and open source application under active development that can be installed on a server for complete control and customization; for those without a server, there is subscription hosting available at Omeka.net. Themes and plug-ins provide an easy level of customization for non-programmers, and much of the backend functionality is tailored to archives, libraries, museums, and cultural heritage organizations, while supporting rich display and social media functionality on the front end.
